Activity Description: | Riverdale Montessori/ Kingsbridge Montessori Schools of Jasmine Educational Enterprises, provides Free Pre-k (4yrs old). At Riverdale & Kingsbridge Montessori Schools (RMS/KMS) the goal for our children is to provide each child with all the necessary skills and confidence to grow independently. Children are encouraged to reach their full potential through teaching methods that develop the whole personality of the child—not only intellectually, but also their powers of deliberation, initiative, independent choice, and emotional development. We offer two individualized programs for children ages two to five - Preschool/Toddler Program and Pre-K Program. This way, children can grow within the organization over 3 years. The overall goal of each classroom is to have the children enjoying themselves while learning at their own pace, and to begin the education process with a positive approach to learning. We aim to reach this goal by setting meaningful expectations of each child, that when fulfilled, will equip them with the confidence to challenge their individual capability. Those expectations are translated through a curriculum that is less prescribed and more child-centered. Our goals for our families is to ensure that their child is always safe and nurtured while in our care, but also engaged in a stimulating and enriching early childhood curriculum. Additionally, given that we are in incredibly diverse community, we strongly believe in the importance of providing a for all equal opportunity early childhood education program. Our school is one that opens its doors to families of all backgrounds regardless of their religion/race/country of origin. Our goal for the community is for RMS/KMS to continue be viewed as a resource whereby families that are unable to afford the cost of private education can utilize our programing to provide their preschool aged children with a solid foundation for school aged programming. This would not be possible without striving to build relationships with other child-centered community resources such as after school programs, local libraries, & public/private schools. Our long-term community goal is for community members to continue to view RMS/KMS at the forefront of the NYC DOE's public Pre-K/early childhood education programing, which is evident in our long-standing relationships with institutions such as the NYC DOE, PS 81, Monroe College, Fordham University, and a continued connection with the community of St James Episcopal Church. To best support children’s learning and development, we believe that it is imperative to have a rigorous curriculum in a safe and accepting environment, a quality leadership and instructional team, and strong relationships with parents and the community in which we serve. One component cannot function without the other. For one, we cannot have an instructional program without a solid curriculum, and children cannot learn from this curriculum if they do not feel safe and nurtured, but also challenged (rigor) with the support of qualified teachers. We cannot execute our rigorous programming and give the children safety and love in an environment without teachers and leaders. Finally, the children and the community we serve are the pinnacle of what we do. Our families must want to come to us, not just to feel welcomed and cared for, but also because of the value that we place on them - the community and the children we serve. Play-based learning: This means that 4 year olds come to school and are stimulated by play, but that they are also engaged in learning while they play. This comes from engaging in conversations, student to student or teacher to student, that push student thinking and expand vocabularies. Choice: By providing students with choice, educators help to boost engagement, which therefore increases learning. This also allows for children to tap into their interests, again increasing learning. Finally, this helps to build autonomy and independence, and for children to feel empowered by having a say in their learning. Student Independence: From early on in a child’s development, they must be taught to do what adults might see as the most basic tasks independently. Although it is hard to think of with children when they are just 4, if early on they are not taught the skills that are necessary for success in everyday life, then we will not be setting them up for success in elementary school/beyond. This starts with building student independence. Student independence is crucial not only with things such as self-care and ability to verbalize, but also with being an independent worker/studier and learning to initiate task on one's own. |
